About Malibu Lagoon Beach
This sandy beach is backed by a lagoon which you cross on boardwalks. As well as surfing, swimming and sunbathing this beach is also great for bird watching due to the nearby lagoon. There are also many pools around which contain interesting wildlife at times.
The sand here is very fine and at low tide, there are tide pools which can contain sea anemones and hermit crabs. Keen birdwatchers have reported seeing gulls, cormorants, great blue heron, snowy egret, osprey, royal tern, surf scoter, marbled godwit, American Wigeon, pelican, scaup, coot, common merganser, plovers and sandpipers. Organised water bird tours are available with local guides.
Because of the flat access from the road to the boardwalk to sand, this is a good choice for those with mobility limitations. There are rocks in the water here so wading in the sand is not recommended without suitable footwear. Surfers will appreciate the good breaks that occur about a quarter of a mile out, making it popular with locals who all welcome visiting surfers as well.
An unusual beach because of the combination with the wildlife of the lagoon, you will find the gardens, picnic seating and all you'd expect for a park, combined with lifeguards and fishing pier of a beach. There are restrooms here but they are portable toilets only.
A parking lot is available and also street parking nearby. Parking fees: No fees for parking on street. Parking in lot is $14.
If you want to eat nearby then there are restaurants in Malibu Country Mart but this is a great place for a picnic and that may be the best option for eating during a trip to the lagoon.
