About Royal Palms
This small sandy Los Angeles beach is sheltered by rocky outcroppings which are one of the best and most popular with tide poolers and those wanting to explore the wildlife of the coastline. A great children's adventure outing, with spaces for a picnic either on tables above the cliff or on the beach itself. Recent visitors have reported crabs, snails, small fishes, starfish, and even starfish and sea slugs wandering through the tide pools. While in the air you'll see the usual pelicans, sea gulls and more of California's native wildlife.
The waterside promenade with its stand of palms, which gives the area its name, is available for event rental. Used for weddings and outdoor parties it there is not always open to the public.
Lifeguards are on duty so swimming and surfing can be done safely here, but there is limited room so this is less popular for that more traditional beach activity. If you are staying all day at the beach pay the $8 parking fee to be right up close, or park along the street and walk down.
Restrooms, showers, trash facilities and all the regular facilities of a county beach are to be found here. There are small traces of the Hot Spring Hotel which was located here in the 1920s, but which closed after natural changes after an earthquake shut off the hot spring. Read more about the history here.
Also popular with local dog walkers, who can be seen walking dogs here on the leash, as well as painters who like the dramatic rocky landscape for their compositions.
