About Malibu Coast AVA
The Malibu Coast American Viticultural Area was officially recognized in 2014, encompassing 46 miles of stunning coastline and extending 8 miles inland. This unique wine region features 52 vignerons cultivating 198 acres of vineyards across dramatic elevation changes from sea level to over 3,000 feet. The region's distinctive red lava soil formations, similar to those found in Sonoma Coast, combined with multiple microclimates created by ocean proximity and mountainous terrain, produce wines of exceptional character and complexity.
Wine grapes have been grown in this area since 1824, and before Prohibition, Los Angeles County was California's largest wine producer. The modern Malibu wine renaissance began in 1985 when Michael McCarty and Dick Graff planted the first contemporary vineyard, establishing what would become one of California's most unique and scenic wine regions.

Wine Varietals & Terroir
Malibu's unique terroir produces distinctive wines shaped by dramatic elevation changes and ocean influence. Cooler coastal areas excel with Chardonnay, Viognier, Sauvignon Blanc, and the rare Gruner Veltliner, benefiting from ocean cooling and developing crisp minerality. Mountain and warmer inland areas produce full-bodied reds including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Grenache, Sangiovese, Petit Verdot, and Mourvèdre, with concentrated flavors from high-elevation mountain fruit.
The region's red lava soil formations create ideal growing conditions, while multiple microclimates within the small area allow for exceptional terroir diversity. This unique combination results in wines with distinct character that reflect both Mediterranean climate advantages and coastal California elegance.

Planning Your Visit
Wine tasting fees typically range from $17-$21 per glass and $45-$63 per bottle, with tour experiences ranging from $49-$149 per person for group activities. Many locations offer wine club memberships with 20-25% discounts from retail prices. Reservations are strongly recommended for most wineries, especially for weekend visits and private tastings.
The best time to visit is during harvest season (September-November) when vineyards are most active, though Malibu's Mediterranean climate makes wine tasting enjoyable year-round. Spring visits offer beautiful wildflower blooms, while summer provides perfect weather for hiking tours and outdoor experiences.
Most wineries are located along Mulholland Highway, making it easy to visit multiple locations in a single day. However, due to the mountainous terrain and winding roads, allow extra travel time between locations and consider designated driver arrangements or professional tour services for the safest and most enjoyable experience.
