About Muscle Beach
From 1970s beach movies to Arnie appearances the image of Muscle Beach is one strongly associated with LA. Probably the most well known outdoor gym in the world it was originally opened in 1934 nearer Santa Monica Pier and then refreshed in 1951 before moving to Venice Beach after 1958. The current structure is from 1990.
Today people visit it for a unique blend of history, physical fitness, classic California lifestyle and more. Although the original beach signs are gone the outdoor exercise equipment remains and the Muscle Beach gym overlooks everything.
As you watch the bodybuilders and gymnasts do their stuff take care where you are standing as the stretch is also popular with rollerbladers, bikers and skaters. Try out the balance beams, rings and rope climbing yourself. Much of the equipment is good for kids as well as adults.
A fee does apply to use the Equipment at Muscle Beach.
Also check out the original Muscle Beach location on Santa Monica Beach which is open and free but consists mainly of rings and bars set out on the sand.
